The California College Media Association honored Sen. Leland Yee Saturday, April 17 at its annual awards banquet for his years of service toward maintaining a free student press.
Yee has sponsored and passed two remarkable bills in his eight years as an assemblyman and senator. Both laws protect student media at high schools, and public and private universities, elevating this state’s free speech protections to some of the toughest in the nation.
Yee was most recently selected to oversee the state’s public records and open-meeting laws. After serving four years in the Assembly, Yee was elected to the Senate in November 2006. This award, named after Yee, will be given out annually to an educator, student, politician or citizen who fights on behalf of student media.
